Trouble Sleeping? Maybe it’s Time for a Sleep Study

Sleep studies, or polysomnography, are diagnostic tools used to evaluate sleep disorders. Older adults experiencing persistent sleep disturbances—such as insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, or observed breathing pauses during sleep—should consider undergoing a sleep study. These assessments can help identify underlying conditions like sleep apnea, which is more prevalent among seniors and can lead to serious health issues if left untreated.

Additionally, if lifestyle modifications and cognitive behavioral therapy do not alleviate sleep problems, a sleep study may provide further insights.  Consulting with a healthcare provider can determine the appropriateness of a sleep study based on individual symptoms and health history.
